Jingle Bells – The Florida Remix

December 14, 2015 by Olivia Lancaster Leave a Comment

Let’s face it, Florida is a special place. Sometimes, that makes it rather easy to create our own special version of things, especially songs! As an example, check out this Florida rendition of “Jingle Bells,” one of the most popular Christmas songs of all time:

jingle bells florida

While the original author is unknown (graphic courtesy of I Love South Florida), the lyrics were obviously crafted by someone familiar with the area – most likely a long-time local.

Lyrics

If you are having trouble viewing the image, the lyrics are as follows:

“Dashing through the sand, in a rented mini-van. Driving by the bay, laughing all the way. Tourists drive too slow, everywhere you go. Oh what fun it is to live in sunny F-L-A. Jingle bells, coconut shells, dolphins in the bay. Oh what fun it is to live in sunny F-L-A. Orange juice stands, Mickey Mouse land, gators in your way. Oh what fun it is to live in sunny F-L-A. Crowded shopping malls, lotto and bingo halls. Sunshine that’s too hot, a football team that’s not. When Santa hits the shores, he finds jellyfish galore. Oh what fun it is to live in sunny F-L-A. ”

Perhaps after a few glasses of eggnog, you’ll be singing it with your family and friends this year!

The Famous Prancercise Workout

January 13, 2013 by I Love South Florida Leave a Comment

If you don’t know what it means to Prancercise®, then you are so out of the loop on what is hot in fitness right now!

Or maybe you just haven’t seen the viral video yet of Coral Springs woman Joanna Rohrback prancing around a park in what is described as “a springy, rhythmic way of moving forward, similar to a horse’s gait and ideally induced by elation.”

If you haven’t seen the video yet, you can do so here:

Prancercise: A Fitness Workout

Rohrback first created the Prancercise® concept in the 1980s, but it didn’t quite catch on.

Two decades, a book, and a viral training video later – it has become an internet sensation.

In an interview, Prancercise creator Joanna Rohrback said, “I prancercised since ’89. One of the things I started to do was power walking with ankle weights on, on this area along the beach in Hollywood, Florida, called the Broadwalk. And one day, I had my headphones on and I heard some really good music that got me going…and all of a sudden, I got more rhythmic, and more accentuated, and more springy, and that was it.”

Future plans? Rohrback said she hopes to open indoor Prancercise tracks franchised all around the country and even Prancercise parks with real live horses in the middle to get exercisers in the mood. Also, a clothing line including specialized shoes, t-shirts, and DVDs.

All exercising aside, I believe Joanna Rohrback has shown the world how fun and creative South Floridians can be.

Mountain Biking at Quiet Waters Park

July 29, 2012 by I Love South Florida 1 Comment

I bought a Mongoose mountain bike from Wal-Mart (and took off all the stickers) for a little over $200 and decided to give this mountain biking thing a try.

I was told there are two great places to mountain bike in South Florida: Markham Park and Quiet Waters Park.

Quiet Waters is the better choice for beginners or those looking to condition their bodies back into biking shape. The trails are smaller and not as intense as those found at Markham, and it usually isn’t a very busy location since most of the pros prefer Markham Park.

I used the Endomondo Sports Tracker app on my iPhone to track my progress and location.

After biking  4.55 miles in about 45 minutes (with some small breaks), I felt great. And even though the bike I used wasn’t professional grade, it held up to the rough terrain and a couple falls without any problems.

If you decide to give it a try, just make sure you are careful and gain enough momentum before attempting any tough ramps. I learned the hard way. Always wear a helmet. Knee pads can’t hurt either. If you carry an iPhone with you, make sure you have proper protection, like an Otterbox. I dropped mine a couple times while using it for music.

After a few more tries, I’m going to try the trails over at Markham Park and I’ll report my experiences here (If I survive!)
